GOP tension and the fight for reproductive care

It is easy to get swept up into sensational presidential debates and forget about the America legislative branch's elections, but the 2024 race for the House is a competitive one. The House of Representatives currently consists of 220 Republicans and 211 Democrats, with 4 vacancies. With such a tight presidential race, the Democrats and Republicans are aiming to ensure their party either gains or maintains control of the House. This is proving to be an interesting fight for GOP candidates.

It is no secret the GOP is currently facing an increase in tension and infighting. Conservative and moderate Republicans are struggling for power over the other during the leadup to this year's election. A key focus for both parties in recent years has been reproductive rights and access to abortion, with Republicans traditionally arguing against the rights previously granted by now overturned Roe v. Wade. In an interesting turn of events, younger and more moderate Republican politicians are now speaking out in favor of less extreme abortion rulings. Pressure from the Harris campaign and the trending slogan, "We are not going back" has forced those courting younger and more liberal voters to reconsider their public position on this heated topic.

As more and more hopeful candidates speak up in favor of access to reproductive care, one may begin to believe that the future of the country involves a reality where women and infants do not have to face death as a consequence of the overturning of Roe v. Wade. Many right-wing candidates maintain their disproval for abortion and will continue to vie for more restrictive laws than many left-wing politicians. Still, the increase in support for legal, limited access to the procedure is certainly a positive news story for those facing life-threatening pregnancies.

  1. This is such an interesting take, and I absolutely love your ability to provide your readers with the silver lining of complex, multi-layered news articles that often hold more information and depth than what is necessarily needed at times. I believe the slogan, "we are not going back," is more powerful than what meets the eye, as going backwards on one thing often leads to a domino effect that could create a human rights backslide within the United States. Women's rights to reproductive healthcare is an extremely important topic that will hopefully be discussed about more in order to reinstill and further secure women's access to safe healthcare and procedures. Thanks so much for sharing! I look forward to reading more of your blogs!
